Trauma/PTSD

What is trauma?

Any situation that causes distress greater than the person’s coping skills at the moment and leaves her or him completely overwhelmed can be traumatic. Balance disturbing event in life such as grief, abusive relationship, neglect, divorce, accident,  unexpected illness or bullying, to name a few, can be subjectively experienced as traumatic.

Even when exposed to the same traumatic event, different people may respond differently. Research shows that the more helpless and frightened the person felt during the event, the more likely that person is to experience emotional or psychological trauma and to later experience the symptoms of Acute Stress Disorder or PTSD.
